TCM can promote holistic well-being by addressing various aspects of health issues. The benefits of using TCM before and after surgery are as follows.
- Can reduce the amount of anesthesia needed during surgery
- Can prevent and treat postoperative nausea and vomiting
- Can help with constipation, urinary retention, and pain management
- Can improve joint movement
TCM is often administered in an integrative form of two or more modalities.
In my clinic, I like to use acupuncture, herbs, and dietary therapy, to prepare patients physically before the surgery. For example, I recommend adding extra high-quality protein, i.e., lean beef and eggs. Protein is a building block that makes immune cells. Having a strong immune system not only lowers the risk of infection but also repairs tissue damage. TCM can help post-surgery recovery by reducing pain, inflammation, and side effects.
Pain management
- Acupuncture: Can reduce inflammation by lowering levels of interleukin (IL)-1 β, IL-6, and S100β. Can reduce pain by stimulating endorphins and inhibiting pain signals
- Herbal remedies: Involves the use of natural herbs to promote healing. These herbs can enhance blood flow, reduce swelling, and support the immune system, which is crucial during post-surgery recovery. Can help manage pain and reduce the need for painkillers.
- Cupping: Can help relax the muscles, improve circulation, and reduce the stress.
- Tui Na Massage: This can stimulate circulation to ensure that nutrients and oxygen reach affected tissues. Can relax the muscles and help stress.
- Qigong and meditation: Can promote relaxation and reduce stress
