I recently had a male patient who suffered from sharp aching in the lower belly and groin, painful ejaculation, and urgency in urination. He was given antibiotics and muscle relaxers, but the symptoms got worse over time. I treated him with acupuncture, moxibustion, and dietary modification, and the symptoms were relieved gradually.
Male pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is super under-discussed and seriously misunderstood. It refers to issues with the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support the pelvic organs, leading to symptoms like urinary problems, sexual dysfunction, and chronic pelvic pain. It is often mistreated as prostatitis, urinary tract infection, enlarged prostate, erectile dysfunction, etc. PFD can be caused by stress, which makes your pelvic muscles stay clenched, injuries (like falls or accidents), surgery, especially prostate surgery, lifting weights, and sitting too long.
Acupuncture is emerging as a complementary treatment option for managing PFD by addressing pain, muscle tension, and overall pelvic health.
